Indie Pop is a genre of alternative rock. It originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980’s. It was assumed to be similar to indie rock, but it differs from indie rock to the extent that it is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. While indie pop did gain recognition in those times, it was also criticised and labelled musical ‘underachievement’.
Nowadays, indie pop has flourished and has also been modified and experimented with electronic sound, coming off as ‘electropop’ by a number of new and renowned artists. This has brought in more critical and commercial acclaim to the genre. Indie pop has a number successful artists and bands, such as Bastille, Imagine Dragons, Lana Del Ray, Lady Gaga, Icona Pop and Lorde.
